A sophisticated, Spanish-style solo with great appeal for the advancing student, this moody piece opens with a darkly romantic L.H. melody punctuated by off-beat, R.H. chordal accompaniment. In ABA form, the middle section's tempo becomes faster and emphasizes the rhythmic underpinnings of the entire work, calling to mind a guitar and castanets heard in a Spanish taverna. The ending features a freely flowing melisma over a pedal point, so typical of Spanish-style music. This piece is an excellent choice for teaching expressive performance.
